Maro wall art
The maro, a frontal apron tied around the waist, was perhaps the most common and basic traditional Māori garment and was worn by both men and women.
Piupiu (Flax Skirts) take a long time to make and considerable skill and experience as well as good weather. This Wall hanging is made with pokinikini (strips) that are based on piupiu design and technique and also shredded and dyed harakeke. The individual components are then put together with Whatu (a kind of binding that is done by hand) and layered to form an almost 3-dimensional piece.
It is a stunning statement piece that deserves a special place due to its presence and beauty and is a true one-off.
