Large-sized Kete Kai with tassels
Kete Kai are traditionally made to gather or hold food of many kinds. The gaps are intentional to let air in and perhaps sand or water escape (if used to collect shellfish for instance). These are usually made with raw/green harakeke (NZ flax) and then dry slowly in whichever shape they are made. They do make wonderful table centres to hold fruit for instance but can be used to store all sorts of items to display them.
